After the States Reorganisation Act of 1956 rearranged state boundaries along linguistic lines, many states were given names in their own languages. The origins of these names can usually be traced back to Sanskrit, excepting Karnataka (Kannada), Kerala (Malayalam), Mizoram (Mizo), Nagaland (English), Puducherry (Tamil), Sikkim, (Limbu), and Tamil Nadu (Tamil).
